Staff Brewing Competition: For Brewers and Tasters!

By Dave Jones on April 23, 2018 in University

The Staff Brewing Competition isn’t just for brewers. It’s for tasters, too, to sample the 14 specialty IPAs, eight brown ales and five ciders that teams are making this year.

blue and gold beer flows from bottle against backdrop of cow and water tower. The competition and tasting (for ages 21 and up) will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Buehler Alumni Center. Tasters must register in advance; no tickets will be sold at the door. You’ll receive a souvenir glass and the samples to go in it. Food will be available for purchase from Tommy J’s Grill & Catering of Davis.

People’s Choice awards will be given for the best brew and best label, with voting to be conducted by mobile app.

Industry professionals and certified judges will decide the top entry in each category, and a Best of Show from among the IPAs and ales. Best of Show wins custody of a perpetual trophy for a year, while the top IPA and top ale will win brewing opportunities at Blue Note Brewing Co. in Woodland (for the IPA) and Three Mile Brewing Co. in Davis (for the ale). A gift card awaits the winning cider team.

Admission is $15 for staff, faculty and Cal Aggie Alumni Association members, $10 for graduate students, and $20 for others; fees pay for the tasting glasses, facility rental and prizes for the best brews.

Tasters: Register and pay here. T-shirts and prize giveaway tickets also are available on the registration page, or you can buy them at the event.
