A leader in the Association of American College and Universities is due on campus Wednesday (May 20) to give a talk on the “enduring value” of a liberal arts education and to present a workshop for the advising community.

The visitor, Debra Humphreys, serves as the college and university association’s vice president for policy and public engagement. She co-authored the association’s recent report on earnings and long-term career paths for liberal arts and sciences majors.

Humphreys’ visit is sponsored by the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies.

“Her talk is not about getting degrees in the liberal arts, so much as maintaining the liberal arts skills (communication, critical thinking, etc.) in all fields,” said Sharon Knox,  director of communications, Undergraduate Education.

She said Humphreys will present data on how liberal arts and sciences majors are faring in employment today, and will delve into questions about curricular requirements and students’ goals and aspirations; what students need both for success in work and life; and the extent to which disciplinary and curricular siloes get in the way of making essential connections.

Carolyn Thomas, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Education, said: “It’s essential that our work in supporting student success be informed by data. The AAC&U’s research will speak directly to a topic of great interest to the campus community.”

Here are more details on her presentations:
