The SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity, or MOSAC, is excited to announce two separate naming partnerships with UC Davis Health and the University of California, Davis. These agreements give UC Davis Health naming rights to MOSAC’s current Health Headlines and future Health Gallery, and UC Davis will name the Digital Dome Theater.

With UC Davis’ 15-year, $2.5 million contribution to the Digital Dome Theater and expertise in the sciences, arts and humanities, the university will be working closely with MOSAC in improving and expanding K-12 educational courses and public programming in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math, collectively known as STEAM. The theater will host a variety of shows, including astronomy and planetarium presentations; films on chemistry and physics; and special feature films, such as documentaries from the National Geographic Society and the BBC.

‘Natural extension of our work’

“This partnership with MOSAC is a natural extension of the work our faculty do every day in research, education and outreach,” UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May said. “We look forward to working with the museum to bring the sciences and arts to life for children and adults alike.”

MOSAC’s Health Gallery will highlight examples of the powerful technology used in medicine, breakthrough scientific research, and detailed understanding of public health programs and the health care system. As a regional health leader, UC Davis Health’s 15-year, $3 million investment in Health Headlines and the Health Gallery will help to create exhibits showing advancements in fields such as medical imaging and personalized cellular therapies, rapidly changing headlines in health research and examples of public health programming that are making a difference in our region.

“UC Davis Health is honored to partner with MOSAC to bring its Health Headlines and the future Health Gallery to the Sacramento region,” said Brad Simmons, chief administrator of UC Davis Medical Center and chief operating officer of UC Davis Health Hospital Division. “Innovation and groundbreaking research are fundamental to our organization’s mission, and we are proud to showcase advancements in tools, treatments and therapies that will improve treatment and enhance patient care in our community.”

‘A world-class hub’

Michele Wong, executive director of MOSAC, said: “We are thrilled to have UC Davis as a major partner at MOSAC. Since the early days of this project, the faculty and graduate students at UCD and UCD Health have worked with us to provide exhibit and program content, expertise and guidance. The excellent resources they bring are invaluable in making MOSAC a world-class hub for science education and innovation. We are facing some of the biggest challenges in history, which will be resolved by the scientists, engineers, researchers and health care workers of tomorrow. Who better to partner with us in our mission to prepare these future innovators?”

The MOSAC experience will include the Digital Dome Theater and the Health Headlines exhibit when the museum opens in mid-November. The full Health Gallery experience is expected to be installed in 2023.
