Reception next week for first CAMPOS Faculty Scholars

The campus community is invited to join Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter at a reception next week for UC Davis’ CAMPOS Faculty Scholars — the first to be selected by the Center for the Advancement of Multicultural Perspectives on Science.

CAMPOS is an initiative of UC Davis ADVANCE, supported by the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE Program, aimed at promoting women’s participation and advancement in academic careers in STEM (science, social science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

According to the CAMPOS mission statement, the center supports the discovery of knowledge by promoting women in science, starting with Latina STEM scholars, through an inclusive environment that is diversity-driven, mentorship-grounded and career success-focused. “CAMPOS builds on the chancellor’s vision of transforming the university to support women in science, especially Latinas,” the mission statement concludes.

CAMPOS leaders describe the center’s faculty scholars as “exceptional scientists” in STEM disciplines, “selected for their transformative thinking, unique perspectives, interdisciplinary approaches, and leadership potential to impact their STEM discipline in profound and enduring ways.”

Here are the CAMPOS Faculty Scholars: Jacqueline Barlow, microbiology and molecular genetics, College of Biological Sciences; Sarah Besky, human ecology, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences; Magdalena Cerda, emergency medicine, Violence Prevention Research Program, School of Medicine; Cindy Rubio Gonzalez, computer science, College of Engineering; Lillian Cruz-Orengo, anatomy, physiology and cell biology, School of Veterinary Medicine; Anna La Torre, cell biology and human anatomy, School of Medicine; and Mariel Vazquez, math, Division of Math and Physical Sciences, College of Letters and Sciences.

“We are honored to have this group of high-achieving STEM researchers, a mixture of junior and senior faculty, join us in our mission to promote diversity and excellence at UC Davis,” said CAMPOS’ founding director, Mary Lou de Leon Siantz, professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

The reception is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Gunrock Pub (at the Silo). Beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be served. RSVPs are requested by Friday (Nov. 7), via this link.
