Professors for the Future workshop set for Feb. 9

The Professors for the Future program is seeking recruits and will hold an information session about the program noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Mee Room at the Memorial Union.

Sponsored by the office of Graduate Studies, the yearlong program is open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in all areas of study. It prepares participants for careers in academia through seminars, panel discussions, monthly meetings and workshops on topics including teaching methods and course design, leadership skills and professional development.

As a major part of the program, participants also design an academic service project and present it at the end of the year to a campus audience.

The program began in 1998. This year, approximately 11 fellows will be accepted -- selected from nominations by faculty, staff and fellow students or postdoctoral scholars. Materials are due March 5.

Past fellows have found work at 26 academic institutions across the nation, from California to Maine, and have also found careers in industry and the U.S. government. The fellows also receive a $3,000 stipend.
