Quick Summary

  • Among 101 businesses on the list for California
  • Survey asked about workplace safety, telecommuting
  • Other factors: Compensation and the opportunity to advance

UC Davis is third and UC Davis Health 12th on Forbes’ latest ranking of best employers in California based on a survey that included questions about safety of the workplace and the employers’ openness to telecommuting — important factors amid a pandemic.

The global media company’s third annual list of America’s Best Employers by State includes 101 California businesses and 1,330 total, all with 500 or more employees.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has tested corporate America in unprecedented ways,” Forbes said in introducing the 2021 rankings. “And just when it seemed the crisis would subside, the light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be another oncoming train in the form of the delta variant.”

Forbes partnered with market research company Statista on the survey of some 80,000 employees of companies with 500 or more employees, with the questionnaires going out on a rolling basis from October 2020 to June 2021.

Among other questions, the survey asked employees about opportunities for advancement and competitiveness of compensation, and how likely they would be to recommend their employer to others, among other questions. People who answered did so anonymously.

California’s top three: California Institute of Technology, first, with 3,900 employees; Adobe, second, 12,608 employees; and UC Davis, third, 31,489 employees. UC Davis Health, 12th, was the top-ranked employer in the “health care and social” sector.

Others in the top 15 include Microsoft, Netflix, Genentech, Visa and Google.
