Founding dean Heather M. Young retires
Heather M. Young, founding dean of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, has retired from faculty service after 18 years of leadership, teaching and innovation.
“Her leadership established the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing as something intentionally different — a school designed to advance health through leadership, innovation, interprofessional education and bold systems change,” said Jana Katz-Bell, senior associate dean for strategic initiatives.
Dean Stephen J. Cavanagh said Young’s vision continues to guide the school as it prepares the next generation of health leaders.
“Heather did more than establish a school. She created a culture that encourages people to challenge assumptions, work across disciplines and find better ways to improve health and healthcare,” Cavanagh said. “The school’s continued growth and impact are a testament to the strong foundation she built and the many people she inspired.”

Provost’s interim chief of staff
Erika Jackson, director of Institutional Analysis, will serve as the interim assistant executive vice chancellor and chief of staff in the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, beginning Sept. 14. Currently serving as the director of Institutional Analysis in Finance, Operations and Administration, Jackson joined UC Davis 14 years ago as the director of Policy and Analysis for Undergraduate Admissions.
As interim assistant executive vice chancellor and chief of staff, Jackson will support the Provost’s Office in matters related to academic affairs, shared governance, campus budget, labor relations, issues management, enrollment planning and executive personnel changes. Jackson replaces Jason Stewart, who recently was selected as the new chief of staff for Chancellor May, a role he will begin on Sept. 21.
“I am deeply grateful for Jason’s exceptional service as my chief of staff over nearly four years and I congratulate him on his new role supporting Chancellor May,” said Mary Croughan, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. “Erika is highly collaborative, knowledgeable and thoughtful, and she has been an outstanding partner on several initiatives and projects in the Provost’s Office. She will be a great addition to our office and I look forward to welcoming her to the team.”
The search for a permanent assistant executive vice chancellor and chief of staff will be launched in the spring.

Audit and Management Advisory Services director
Ryan Dickson has decided to remain at UC Davis and will return to his position as director of Audit and Management Advisory Services, effective Aug. 20.
Officials expressed appreciation to Janet Cox, who would have served as interim director during the expected transition.
With Dickson’s return, UC Davis will no longer proceed with the previously announced national search for a permanent director.
