A NOTE TO OUR READERS: We're switching to Tuesdays!

Friday Update — news and information by email to faculty and staff — is moving to Tuesday next week, and, obviously, getting a new name! It’s actually an old name: Dateline UC Davis. Look for the first edition of the Dateline newsletter on Tuesday (Sept. 10).

Why are we switching days after nearly five and a half years of Friday Update? Because we here in the Office of Strategic Communications have heard from many readers who said a publication day earlier in the week would give them more time to read, share and discuss the news throughout the week.

Dateline UC Davis originated as a newspaper on Nov. 6, 1987, combining Staff News, a mimeographed publication (first on goldenrod paper, then on white paper), and the faculty’s Campus Record, the “green sheet,” a listing of seminars and colloquia, and some brief announcements.

We started Friday Update in April 2008 as a compendium of stories of campuswide interest, official announcements, the latest research findings and UC Davis-related content from other media. Everyone in Strategic Communications — including public information representatives and photographers — contributes to Friday Update (and now the Dateline UC Davis newsletter), and we welcome content from our schools and colleges, too. Event listings are often taken from the online campus calendar — so we encourage you to use it.

Two years after launching Friday Update, we discontinued Dateline as a print publication. We kept the Dateline website, however, and we are in the process of remaking it into a more robust site. So, even though you’re getting the Dateline newsletter in your inbox every week, we encourage you to bookmark the Dateline website for news that didn’t make it into the email and for updates throughout the week.

We hope you like the new publication day, and, most of all, we hope you keep clicking.

Please let us know what you think.

Sincerely,

Dave Jones
