Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht says a ceiling collapse resulted in minor injuries to two campus firefighters in a two-story apartment building fire in Dixon late Friday afternoon.

The firefighters had been released to go home after being seen at Sutter Davis Hospital, Trauernicht said. Following protocol, he did not name the firefighters.

The Dixon Fire Department responded to the fire just after 4 p.m., at a time when one of the city’s firetrucks was in Vacaville assisting on a grass fire that was threatening several neighborhoods. Crews contained that fire to 57 acres, with no structure damage, according to The (Vacaville) Reporter.

Meanwhile, other Dixon firefighters tackled the apartment fire with help from the UC Davis and city of Davis fire departments, plus the Woodland and Winters departments.

Trauernicht said the campus firefighters were pulling down the ceiling, to get at flames in the attic, when a large section of the ceiling came down under the weight of water that other firefighters were spraying into the attic space. The firefighters returned to the station, where the injuries to their head, neck, back and spine grew in intensity, prompting both of them to go to Sutter Davis Hospital, the chief said.

“Both were treated and released with minor injuries that will keep them off work at least five days.”
