IN MEMORIAM: Lab Programmer David Benning

David Benning, a longtime programmer in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ Analytical Laboratory, died in a car accident on Oct. 7 at the age of 65.

Rani Youngman, director of the lab, said Benning was a positive and caring colleague known for his talents as a baker and musician.

“Dave will be remembered for his warm smile, positive attitude and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever someone needed it,” Youngman said. “He had a way of brightening the workplace, often sharing his delicious homemade cookies, affectionately known as his ‘Granny Hot Rods,’ which were always a welcome treat among his colleagues.”

Benning joined UC Davis in 2004, in the Center for Animal Disease Modeling and Surveillance in the Weill School of Veterinary Medicine. He moved to the Analytical Laboratory, or AnLab, in 2007 and rose to the level of systems administrator 2.

Youngman said Benning was always willing to help and was also an inspiring mentor to others. Outside of work, Benning was very involved in his church and played piano and other instruments, Youngman said, adding that Benning even had perfect pitch, or the ability to identify a note by hearing it.

“He was very gifted but very humble,” Youngman said. “While his passing has left an immeasurable void in our AnLab family, we are grateful for the privilege of having known him. His smile, generosity, and uplifting spirit will always be remembered.”

Youngman has launched a fundraiser to benefit Benning’s family; donations can be made online.

Benning is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, children Nathaniel, Meredith and Natalie, as well as five grandchildren.
