The UC Davis School of Law will host its fifth annual MLK Day of Service and Celebration on Monday, Jan. 15, to honor Martin Luther King Jr., the namesake of the law school’s King Hall, on his holiday.
The Black Law Students Association, in collaboration with this year’s MLK Day Working Group and the Office for Student Affairs, organized several activities to provide an opportunity for community members to give back and celebrate the civil rights leader.
The event is free, open to the public and includes lunch during the keynote address.
Service opportunities: Donate, volunteer
Donation drive for Wellspring Women’s Center. The center in Sacramento’s Oak Park community serves nearly 200 women and children each weekday by providing healthy meals, case management, free counseling and safety net services.
Items such as non-perishable food, toiletries, and art supplies are encouraged.
Law school students will be outside King Hall to collect donations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, individuals can order items from the center’s wishlist; any ordered items will be sent directly to the center.
There are also three volunteer days at the center (Jan. 12, Jan. 16 and Jan. 17) where community members can help feed the women and children.

Volunteer at Fourth and Hope in Woodland at 8:30 a.m. Fourth and Hope's mission is to feed, clothe, shelter and facilitate recovery for those in need. Projects will include painting and cleanup.
Celebration: Keynote from judge
The noontime luncheon program will feature a keynote address from Sacramento Superior Court Judge Allison Williams. Before she was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021, Williams served as an attorney for 15 years at the Sacramento Public Defender's Office.
