Employees systemwide reject UPTE representation

A union election concerning UC administrative professionals concluded last week with employees voting to reject union representation by a 2-to-1 margin.

The University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union had asked the California Public Employment Relations Board for an election to exclusively represent approximately 12,000 campus and hospital administrative professionals. The vote impacted approximately 1,100 UC Davis workers.

Systemwide, campus administrative professional staff voted 4,846 to 2,637 in favor of no representation. Hospital administrative professional staff voted 463 to 181 in favor of no representation.

At Dateline's deadline no campus breakdowns of these numbers were available.

The election took place Feb. 11 to March 3. PERB sent ballots to the homes of affected employees, who then returned their ballots via mail.

Overall voter turnout for the election was approximately 70 percent. As in all such elections, a simple majority of voting employees determined the outcome.
