Toy car with animal models as mechanics.

UC Davis TRACS (Teaching and Research Animal Care Services) is racing for “likes” in a national contest to raise money for lab animal science grants and scholarships. Animal care technicians Kathleen Farrelly, Taylor Hunsucker, Cesar Perez, Kelly Sison and Jeffrey Wagner created Car 018, titling it “AniMechanics,” referring to the mouse, guinea pig and pig that are changing out the front tires. The contest is being run by the American Association of Lab Animal Science, in connection with its annual conference in November. The entry with the most “likes” on Facebook will win the Fan Favorite Award, and the winning car will be auctioned in a fundraising auction at the conference. So, Dateline readers, click on over to this Facebook page and hit the “like” this car!

Make your mark on a 'grand' ribbon

The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art ribbon.

The ribbon being used for the grand opening of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art isn't any ordinary ribbon. It's a 1,500-foot-long work of art that will be decorated by UC Davis students, faculty, staff, and area art lovers. The first decoration event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 5) on the south patio of the Memorial Union. Davis Farmers Market attendees and those at area museums will also get a chance to lend their hand to the ribbon at other events through October.
