By Dave Jones on March 24, 2014 in University News

The College of Engineering and the National Academy of Engineering make for a powerful team in presenting a public symposium on manufacturing, next Tuesday, April 1.

The free symposium is being held in conjunction with a regional meeting of the academy — the first such meeting ever held at UC Davis. And why not? We have 14 members  here!

The academy meeting, to be held in the morning, is private. The symposium will run from 1:45 to 6 p.m. in Ballrooms A and B at the Conference Center. Interested in attending? Please register here.

Academy members at UC Davis include Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Dean Enrique Lavernia, a distinguished professor of chemical engineering and materials science.

Katehi and Lavernia will join the academy president, Dan Mote, Regents Professor, University of Maryland, College Park. in giving opening remarks at the symposium.

Two speakers will discuss Cepheid, a developer and manufacturer in the health care field of molecular diagnostic testing. Academy member M. Allen Northrup, a principal of the Northrup Consulting Group, will give a presentation titled, “Cepheid: An Example of Successful Technology Transfer"; while Cepheid’s executive vice president and chief medical and technology officer, David Persing, will address “Cepheid, State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Systems, Their Roots and Their Horizons.”

The program also includes two members of the UC Davis faculty:

  • Kyriacos Athanasiou, distinguished professor and chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering — “Translating Engineering Advances to Medicine: A Conduit Toward Manufacturing in Biomedical Engineering.”
  • Cristina Davis, professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering —  “Miniature Chemical Sensors and Smart Algorithms for Noninvasive Biological Monitoring.”

Another speaker, Curtis R. Carlson, president and chief executive officer,, SRI International, will address "Creating Abundance Through Innovation Across Society."
