At her swearing-in ceremony, UC Davis police chief Annette Spicuzza, center, chats with prior Chief Calvin Handy and interim Chief Rita Spaur, who held the post after Handy left last fall. Spicuzza was sworn-in Tuesday at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, becoming the first woman to receive a permanent appointment as police chief at UC Davis. Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef led Spicuzza in reciting the oath of office, and Spicuzza’s brother-in-law, UC Davis professor Glenn Young of Food Science and Technology, pinned on Spicuzza’s badge. Spicuzza has nearly 20 years of policing and administrative experience in municipal and university settings. She had been serving as assistant chief at the University of Washington since 2000.
