A painted lady in the arboretum -- perhaps you will see a butterfly like this one during a free tour Sept. 29.

The UC Davis Arboretum is inviting the public to take a look at pretty plants and pretty butterflies this weekend.

First, Friends of the Arboretum have scheduled a preview tour on Sept. 29 for the 33rd annual Plant Faire the following weekend. The free preview is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the arboretum nursery at Orchard Park, Orchard Road near LaRue Road. Free parking is available in Lot 35 off Orchard Road.

The Plant Faire is scheduled for Oct. 6 at the same place. Members only can shop from 7 to 9 a.m.

If you are not a member, or if your membership is up for renewal, you are welcome to pay your membership fee the day of the Plant Faire and become immediately eligible to shop during the members-only sale. For nonmembers, the Plant Faire runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Members receive a 10 percent discount on purchases. And, during the Plant Faire, new and renewing members will each receive a free plant plus $5 off the membership fee, cutting the cost to $10 for students, $35 for individuals and $55 for families.

An Arboretum Adventures program, Butterflies In and Around the Arboretum, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 29. Organizers said entomology professor Arthur Shapiro will give a talk on local butterflies and lead a walk through the arboretum to look for butterflies and their habitat. Free; all ages welcome. Meet on the Wyatt Deck, adjacent to the redwood grove, Old Davis Road.

Also at the arboretum: Oct. 5 -- Folk Music Jam Session. Play or listen. Free and open to the public. Noon, Wyatt Deck. Parking $6 in Lot 5, Old Davis Road and A Street.
