"Cello Shots" and more are listed as part of the Department of Music's annual Cello Festival, a series of concerts and classes set to begin Jan. 31. The festival is scheduled to culminate Feb. 11 with an orchestra performance showcasing Laurie San Martin of the music faculty, as composer of a concerto, and David Russell, an artist-in-residence, as the featured performer.

The festival is scheduled to open with concerts at noon Jan. 31 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N St., Sacramento, and 12:05 p.m. Feb. 1 in Room 115 of the Music Building, both featuring students of Susan Lamb Cook, faculty affiliate in cello at UC Davis, and the festival's organizer and director. Both of these concerts are free, though donations will be asked at the church concert.

Another free concert is scheduled at 12:05 p.m. Feb. 8 in Room 115, featuring Russell and pianist Eric Zivian.

Evening concerts include Cello Shots on Feb. 2, Multicelli on Feb. 3 and a Russell recital on Feb. 4.

For San Martin's Cello Concerto, Russell is set to join the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra at its Feb. 11 concert in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The orchestra's program also includes Antonín Dvorák's Symphony No. 8 in G Major.
