Erin Goodwin-Guerrero Works Shown in Exhibition

Exhibit Title: "Lost Civilizations and Endangered Species" Date: Through March 26 Where: C.N. Gorman Museum 1316 Hart Hall University of California, Davis Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and by appointment Artist: Erin Goodwin-Guerrero "Lost Civilizations and Endangered Species," a mixed-media exhibit by California artist Erin Goodwin-Guerrero, is on display at the C.N. Gorman Museum. In her paintings, Goodwin-Guerrero uses photo-silkscreen images of boxers on canvas. She heightens the violence of boxing with splatterings of color; red and white paint mark each jab and punch. The names of the boxers are handwritten in paint across each canvas, ritualizing the memory of each fight, each man who relied on his physical strength and desire to struggle for fame, money, power and survival. At one level, Goodwin-Guerrero's paintings are riveting because of the raw physicality and violence of boxing. Goodwin-Guerrero applies another level of meaning by juxtaposing photo-silkscreen imagery of Mayan ruins and temples with the images of the boxers. The fighters' battles are put into context with greater struggles for civilization. Goodwin-Guerrero writes, "I like the boxing ring as a metaphor for the struggle to survive and thrive. It's a brutal theater. The fighter may be merely raw material or labor for the promoter who capitalizes on his necessity and desire. The odds of 'striking' it rich are slim, and the pitfalls along the road to riches can be fatal. Yet it's one of the few arenas open to certain youth burning with energy and dreams." Goodwin-Guerrero's works come to the Gorman Museum after international exhibitions in Israel and Argentina. She is an associate professor of art at San Jose State University. Active in her local community, she is a board member of Movimento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana and is currently working on "Emerging Visions," a project with Latino youth sponsored by M.A.C.L.A. and the San Jose Art League.
