Federally Funded Research Gave Tom a Future

At 29, just months after moving to California, Tom went to the emergency room struggling to breathe. He was diagnosed with an aggressive stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and began chemotherapy the next day. Multiple treatment regimens failed. The tumor kept growing. Options were running out.

Tom enrolled in a federally funded clinical trial at UC Davis led by Dr. Joseph Tuscano. The targeted cell therapy brought him into remission and made a stem cell transplant possible.

Now eight years cancer-free, Tom’s survival reflects the life-saving power of sustained federal investment in research. The trial not only saved his life, but it also paved the way for future patients facing the same diagnosis.

“If it wasn’t for the federal funding of this trial, I wouldn’t be here today.” –Tom Mungo
