What’s Open, What’s Closed: Winter Break 2023

As the fall quarter draws to an end, options for coffee and food on campus will soon be very limited. The final day for fall instruction is Friday (Dec. 15), and winter break will follow until the first day of instruction for the winter quarter on Jan. 8.

Food and coffee

Friday will also be the last day to eat or purchase coffee at the ASUCD Coffee House, the Silo, the campus dining commons, or the on-campus retail markets and Peet’s Coffee locations. Starting the following day, they will all be closed through the first week of January.

The Segundo Dining Commons will open for dinner Jan. 5-7, and all other eateries — including the CoHo, other dining commons and coffee shops — will reopen with regular hours Monday, Jan. 8.

If you find yourself on campus during winter break and are in need of a snack or caffeine fix, the Hyatt Place UC Davis hotel will maintain its 24-7 grab-and-go market and espresso bar.

Transportation Services

During winter break, paid parking permits will still be required on all weekdays except university holidays (Dec. 25-26, Dec. 29 and Jan. 1). During those holidays, Transportation Services’ office will be fully closed, along with its mobility shuttle and motorist assistance.

From Dec. 18-22 and Dec. 27-28, Transportation Services will operate under a partial closure, meaning the department’s office is closed and mobility shuttle will not operate, but staff will respond to email and have limited availability to respond for motorist assistance and bike program services as needed.

Unitrans

This week, Unitrans is operating on its fare-free finals week schedule, which adds more late-night trips. Next week, Unitrans will operate on a break schedule: Only the B, E, F, G, K, L-MU, M, O, P, Q and U lines will run, and all service will be to and from the Memorial Union Terminal.

Unitrans will not operate Dec. 24-25. It will operate on a weekend schedule Dec. 26-30, and will not operate Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

From Jan. 2-5, it will again operate on the same break schedule to and from the Memorial Union.

Unitrans will resume its regular, academic year schedule starting Monday, Jan. 8.

More details are available on the Unitrans website.

Library

Starting Dec. 16, the main building of Shields Library will be closed. It will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Through that period, the 24-Hour Study Room will remain open. Day-by-day hours are available on the UC Davis Library website.

Memorial Union

The Memorial Union will close Dec. 16-17, and will operate on a reduced schedule the following week. Starting Dec. 23, it will be fully closed through the rest of winter break, reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

The Memorial Union Games Area will be open every day through Dec. 22. Starting the next day, it will be closed through Jan. 7, reopening Jan. 8. Hours are available online.
