UC Davis’ strategic planning process, “To Boldly Go,” moves into the forum phase starting tomorrow — with the campus community invited to help in developing the university’s high-level goals and strategies to achieve them. The strategic planning steering committee is hosting the forums.

These three sessions are for staff, faculty, students — everyone:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 24 — noon-1 p.m., multipurpose room, Student Community Center
  • Tuesday, Jan. 30 — noon-1 p.m., ballroom, Conference Center
  • Tuesday, Feb. 13 — noon-1 p.m., multipurpose room, Student Community Center

The organizers described the sessions as interactive — a group brainstorming activity — where participants will go around the room to different stations with categories like “Excellence in Research and Scholarship,” “A Superior Education for Our Students” and “High Visibility and Public Impact.”

Each station will include an easel and oversized pad of paper, where people can write down their thoughts. Groups will cluster the ideas and identify themes, and then everyone will have the opportunity to browse all the stations again.

Light refreshments will be provided, but please feel free to bring your lunch as this is a brown bag event.

Two sessions have been designated for faculty:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 30 — 9-11:30 a.m., ballroom, Conference Center
  • Monday, Feb. 26 — 1:30-4 p.m., ballroom, Conference Center

Rachael E. Goodhue, chair of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate, said in an email to faculty: “I am confident that upcoming strategic planning will be well served by faculty who offer fresh ideas and ask tough questions. And in the process, I hope we as a campus build our future on the foundation of shared governance that has supported our past.”

And two sessions for everyone will be held on the Sacramento campus:

  • Monday, Feb. 5 — 7-8 a.m., 1222 Education Building
  • Thursday, Feb. 15 — 4-5 p.m., 1222, Education Building

‘Creative and bold ideas’

“UC Davis is a powerful education, research and public service force working to make the world a better place,” Chancellor Gary S. May when he launched the strategic planning process. “With all of our strengths, however, we remain a sleeping giant. I’m asking the collective community to come together and contribute creative and bold ideas that will propel us to accomplish things we’ve only dreamed of in the past.”

The forums are only one to contribute to the strategic plan. Goals and strategies also are welcome via this online form.
