UC Davis' Empyrean Ensemble in 2007-08 is celebrating 20 years of making modern music. The new season, described in a news release as "engaging, invigorating and insightful," is set to begin Oct. 14 with the annual Fault Lines concert, presenting new works by California composers.

The UC Davis ensemble-in-residence, founded by composer Ross Bauer, is a professional, contemporary group "devoted to the performance of music of our times," according to the news release.

"Through its commissioning, premiering and recording efforts, the ensemble not only carries on the traditions established by 20th century masters but also actively engenders the creation of new works written by renowned and emerging composers."

With "compelling performances and diverse programming," the ensemble allows audiences to "experience new musical sensations with high artistry."

Since its founding in 1988, the Empyrean Ensemble has premiered nearly 200 works and performed throughout California, including shows at many prominent music festivals and concert series.

The ensemble has recorded two full-length CDs, including a recording of the chamber music of Mario Davidovsky, and has been a featured ensemble on many others.

The ensemble's 2007-08 season comprises four concerts in the Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, with two of those concerts to be repeated in other venues, plus a special concert with the women's chorus Vox Musica in Sacramento.

"Demystifying the Music" talks are planned an hour before each concert in the Studio Theatre.
