8 New UC Davis Picnic Day Exhibits to See in 2016

Every Picnic Day, thousands of visitors flock to UC Davis to see what the campus has to showcase. The 102nd Picnic Day will feature more than 200 exhibits and animal events including classics like the Frisbee Dog Contest and Maggot Art. This year, there are more than 20 new events to give you something new to experience at Picnic Day. Here are our top picks:

1. Chase the toxins

Come experiment with hair-raising techniques and discover how scientists are using alternative and organic materials to clean up chemical spills.
Where: Briggs Hall lawn
When: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

2. Give a hoot

Give a hoot

Stop by the “Friends of the Burrowing Owl” exhibit and learn more about these charismatic local animals. You’ll discover burrowing techniques used by these birds and become a master burrower yourself in the the interactive booth.
Where: Academic Surge hallway
When: 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

3. (Video) game on

Have you always wanted to create your own video game? Come check out the games made by students from UC Davis’ Game Development & Arts Committee at the Games Demo Showcase. There will be games ranging from platformers to virtual reality.
Where: Kemper Hall lounge
When: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

4. Get artsy

Meet the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, your new university art museum, opening Nov. 13. Come to Vanderhoef Quad to win prizes and capture the excitement at the photo booth. Stop by Walker Hall lawn to win more prizes and feed your creativity at the picnic “feast—art” the visitor can create.

5. Make a splash

Watch the current UC Davis Water Polo Club members compete against the alumni in this Picnic Day showdown. The women’s game is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and the men’s game is from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

6. Saddle up

Saddle up

Dream of becoming a cattleman? Join us at the UC Davis Young Cattlemen‘s Association booth for dummy roping, or create your own chaps and cattle brand.
Where: Cole Facility Arena
When: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

7. Beet your shirt, and compost

Dye your own shirt using natural dyes from turmeric and beets with the fine folks of the EcoHub. While your shirt soaks up color, learn about the different stages of composting from Project Compost.
Where: TB 24 (between Rock Hall and the Silo, behind the Bike Barn)
When: 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

8. Get out the vote for Picnic Day

Forget about those noisy candidate debates. Vote for your favorite Picnic Day exhibits that highlight authenticity (the Picnic Day theme) and showcase the vast diversity of UC Davis. Vote for your favorite exhibits in these categories: “family-friendly,” “hidden treasure,” “arts," “tasty” and “academic." All are welcome to vote, online, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Picnic Day. Winning exhibits will be celebrated on social media.
