Malaria talk part of U.N. film festival

The United Nations Association Traveling Film Festival plans a stop in Davis on March 18. This year's festival, the third annual, is titled "Sparks of Humanity." The festival of seven documentaries is scheduled from 5 to 10:30 p.m. at the Varsity Theatre, 616 Second St. Here is the program:

  • 5:15 p.m. -- The Blood of Yingzhou District, about an orphaned Chinese boy with human immunodeficiency virus. (2007 Oscar winner)
  • 6 p.m. -- True Whispers, about Navajo code talkers in World War II.
  • 7 p.m. -- Malaria: No. 1 Killer, about villages in Ethiopia decimated by malaria. After the film, a discussion is planned with medical entomologist Gregory Lanzaro, director of the statewide UC Mosquito Research Program and the UC Davis Center for Vectorborne Diseases.
  • 7:30 p.m. -- The Tsunami Generation, about the Aceh province in Indonesia in the wake of the tsunami disaster that killed 200,000 people and left half a million homeless.
  • 8:30 p.m. -- Rights on the Line: Vigilantes on the Border, about militarization and vigilantism on the Mexican and U.S. border.
  • 9 p.m. -- Between Two Stones: Nepal's Decade of Conflict, about the civil war in Nepal.
  • 9:30 p.m. -- Rosita, about a young girl in Nicaragua who went from rape victim to unwitting victor.

Film festival tickets are $10 and can be prepurchased at the theater and these other Davis locations: International House, City Hall and Avid Reader Bookstore. More information on the film festival is available online: www.unaff.org.
