Inspiring Women to Pursue Math and Science

More than 850 young women from the Sacramento area will find out how taking more science and math classes can lead to a wider range of career choices on Saturday, May 4, at UC Davis through "Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics," a conference for seventh through 12th-grade female students. The conference will include more than 60 sections with presentations by women professionals in fields ranging from genetic engineering to science journalism. Women students are not pursuing math and science courses as much as we would like, says Phil Knox, conference coordinator in the campus student services office. "Men far outnumber women in professional careers where knowledge of math and science is a necessary component of the job." Knox hopes this conference will give students the incentive to be more aggressive in taking courses in science and math.
