Profile of Kelley Weiss
Kelley’s dad always told her that he ‘sold nuts and bolts’ at the business he founded. Now a writer in the College of Engineering, she’s starting to understand what his Process Safety Management company was all about. (Courtesy photo)

Growing up my teachers often told me that I sure asked a lot of questions, so it only seems appropriate that I’ve made a career out of it.

Since graduating with a bachelor’s of science degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, I’ve worked as a newspaper staff writer and photographer, public radio producer and talk show host. I spent most of my time as a health care reporter filing stories for KQED in San Francisco, National Public Radio, the Center for Investigative Reporting and Capital Public Radio.

I joined the College of Engineering in spring 2016 and I’m having fun learning all about space travel, 3D printing used to help regrow bones and underwater robots.

What drives me

Sharing people’s stories.

Most memorable trip

Taking a small river boat deep into the Amazon’s backwaters in Brazil to find the açaí berry. This was for a series of stories investigating health claims around the ‘super food’ and how the gentrification of the berry impacts the locals who depend on it.

Favorite wild animal

The California quail — topknots are the best.
