Red carpet entry: Myrna Malqued (12.25 years) arrives at the New Retirees Reception, gliding along the Walk of Stars, a red carpet lined on both sides by stars for each of the new retirees in attendance.

Quick Summary

  • Professor Barbara Horwitz leads in longevity: 50.83 years
  • 558 academic and staff retirees from the Davis and Sacramento campuses
  • Chancellor May says “UC Davis’ true greatness is not told by its infrastructure, but rather by its people”

In summers past, the hundreds of people listed in this article would be right here with us, caught up in the hustle and bustle of preparing for a new academic year. But this year they have something else on their minds: their new lives as retirees!

They are academics and staff members from the Davis and Sacramento campuses, 558 people in all who retired during the 2017-18 academic year.

Nearly 200 of them turned out for the New Retirees Reception, presented annually by the Retiree Center in conjunction with the Emeriti and Retirees associations.

Chancellor Gary S. May, at podium, gesturing with hand.
Chancellor May addresses new retirees.

“I’m very glad to have this opportunity to publicly express the university’s deep gratitude for your years of dedicated service,” Chancellor Gary S. May said in his remarks at the reception, held at the Conference Center.

How many years altogether? 12,274.74. Who had the most? Distinguished Professor and former university administrator Barbara Horwitz: 50.83 years.

The chancellor encouraged the retirees to appreciate their efforts on behalf of the university and to acknowledge they contributed to the “big picture.” And he asked the retirees to stay connected to “their” university.

Read more of the chancellor’s remarks and see photos from the New Retirees Reception, interspersed with the names of our new retirees.

Here they are, listed according to years of service, starting with the most. Each name is followed by years of service to the university, and the employee's last position (job title); department, unit, office or program (if applicable); and college/school/division.
