Ten faculty members of the University of California, Davis, are among the newly elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the association announced today (Nov. 27). The new class comprises 416 fellows recognized for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

The new fellows will be formally recognized at the association’s next annual meeting, to be held in February in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1848, AAAS describes itself as the world’s largest general interest scientific society. It is the publisher of the journal Science and a number of other academic journals.
Here are the new fellows from UC Davis, all of them professors, listed with their department and college/school affiliations, along with the AAAS sections to which they were elected and the AAAS citations stating why each fellow was voted in.
Sean M. Burgess
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, College of Biological Sciences: Elected to the Biological Sciences Section, for distinguished contributions to the field of genetics, particularly for using model genetic organisms to understand features of the eukaryotic nucleus.
Savithramma Dinesh-Kumar
Department of Plant Biology, College of Biological Sciences: Elected to the Biological Sciences Section, for distinguished contribution to plant immune receptors and the role of chloroplast stromules and autophagy in innate immunity.
M. Saif Islam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering: Elected to the Engineering Section, for research and development of nanostructure-based sensors and detectors, particularly highly sensitive ultrafast photodetectors enabled by photon-trapping micro-nanostructures for data and telecommunication.
Philip H. Kass
Department of Population Health and Reproduction, School of Veterinary Medicine: Elected to the Medical Sciences Section, for distinguished contributions to general and veterinary epidemiology and preventive veterinary medicine, particularly in the health and well-being of companion animals.
Carlito Lebrilla
Department of Chemistry, College of Letters and Science: Elected to the Chemistry Section, for distinguished contributions to glycoscience in the development of methods for characterizing and profiling glycoconjugates and the subsequent development of biomarkers for diseases and nutrition.
Isaac Pessah
Department of Molecular Biosciences, School of Veterinary Medicine; and MIND Institute: Elected to the Medical Sciences Section, for extraordinary contributions to research in ryanodine receptor structure (RyRs) function and pharmacology, and for service to the profession.
Eric Post
Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences: Elected to the Biological Sciences Section, for groundbreaking work on the impact of climate change on wildlife conservation and ecosystem function, particularly in Arctic biomes.
Michael A. Rogawski
Departments of Neurology and Pharmacology, School of Medicine: Elected to the Neuroscience Section, for distinguished contributions in the fields of neuroscience, neuropharmacology and neurology, particularly applied to the treatment of epilepsy.
J. Edward Taylor
Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences: Elected to the Agriculture, Food and Renewable Resources Section, for pioneering research to uncover impacts of policy, market and environmental shocks on economic outcomes in local economies, international migration and natural resource conservation.
Steven M. Theg
Department of Plant Biology, College of Biological Sciences: Elected to the Biological Sciences Section, for distinguished contribution to the study of protein translocation across biological membranes, particularly those in chloroplasts, and of chloroplast bioenergetics.
