‘Science of Cats’ on the National Geographic Channel

Research by cat geneticist Leslie Lyons of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is featured in a new National Geographic Channel program titled "Science of Cats."

It relates to work by Lyons and graduate student Monika Lipinski, tracing the ancestry of the modern day domestic cat to the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East. The researchers published their study in the January edition of the journal Genomics.

"Science of Cats" is scheduled to premiere at 7 p.m. Pacific time June 10 on National Geographic cable television's Explorer series.

Lyons writes about the making of the show in Egypt, where she collected DNA samples from stray cats in the shadow of the pyramids, in a blog at ngcblog.nationalgeographic.com/explorer/?p=47.
