The Organizational Studies (OS) emphasis within the Sociology major provides a broad understanding of the political, social and economic organizations that make up modern society. Whether thinking about the structure of government bureaucracies, legal systems, economic markets, educational systems or workplaces, organizational studies offers an interdisciplinary vantage from which to understand the contemporary world where complex and formal organizations are ubiquitous. Formal organizations influence how we feel, what we think, and what we can accomplish.
Mathematical Analytics and Operations Research addresses a critical need in business for scientifically-trained analysts who can use mathematical models to interpret big data, analyze markets and forecast trends—this major is ideally suited to students with an interest in business or economics. Students will develop the skills to perform data analysis and develop reliable models for forecasting, decision-making and long-term planning in fields ranging from financing to entertainment and education.
The study of economics is the study of choices. How should a society choose to allocate and distribute its resources? Which needs should have the highest priority, and which are less important? Economists study how people use their limited resources in an attempt to satisfy their unlimited wants. They create scientific models to explain why people behave the way they do, and use these models along with observations of the world to analyze and explain why things happen the way they do.
Students in the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems major focus on the social, economic and environmental aspects of agriculture and develop a thorough understanding of our food cycle from farm to table and beyond. Subjects from eight academic departments will give you a broad understanding of the many aspects of modern agriculture and food systems, and combine with real-world experiences to develop the skills needed to be a successful agriculturalist, entrepreneur and researcher.
