Chancellor Linda P. B. Katehi

UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi heads one of the top 10 universities in the world led by a female leader.

Chancellor since 2009, she oversees all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission.

An electrical engineer and proud UC alum (UCLA ’81 and ’84), Katehi has spent her career focusing on expanding research opportunities for undergraduates and improving the education and profes­sional experience of graduate students, with an emphasis on underrepresented groups.

In addition to her role as chancellor, Katehi holds UC Davis faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies.

The chancellor enjoys a global reputation as a leading STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) educator, and her work in electronic circuit design has led to numerous national and international awards as well as 19 U.S. patents.

Chancellor Linda Katehi is currently on leave. In her absence, Provost Ralph Hexter is Acting Chancellor.

On April 27, 2016 President Janet Napolitano notified Hexter that he would serve as the Acting Chancellor while Linda Katehi is on leave. A classics scholar and longtime university administrator Hexter became provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Davis on January 1, 2011. He also holds an appointment as distinguished professor of classics and comparative literature.

Throughout his career, Hexter has made it a priority to foster excellence across the full range of disciplines, and to promote equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion for students, faculty and staff.

Hexter directs and collaborates with the campus’s vice chancellors, deans, the university librarian and other campus leaders. In addition, he is UC Davis’ chief ethics and compliance officer, and serves as the chancellor’s principal liaison to the Academic Senate.

Acting Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ken Burtis

On May 5, 2016 UC Davis Acting Chancellor Ralph Hexter named Ken Burtis as Acting Provost. In that position, Burtis will direct and collaborate with the campus’s vice chancellors, deans, the university librarian and other campus leaders. In addition, he serves as UC Davis’ chief ethics and compliance officer and as the acting chancellor’s principal liaison to the Academic Senate.

Burtis, the former dean of the College of Biological Sciences and a special advisor to the chancellor, has mentored countless undergraduate and graduate students in research for many years. For two decades he has worked with students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute funded Biological Undergraduate Scholars Program, which provides students with academic enrichment activities and helps to place them in laboratories to obtain undergraduate research experience.
