The Pharmacology and Toxicology Graduate Group is an interdisciplinary program that combines coursework and experimental training in modern approaches to pharmacological and toxicological problems. The group is comprised of more than 80 faculty members from the School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Medicine, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and the College of Biological Sciences. Students gain advanced knowledge on how chemicals in the environment effect the health and ecosystems of humans and animals.
The Soils and Biogeochemistry Graduate Program focuses on the study of physical, chemical, and biological processes that occur in the soils of different landforms and ecosystems. These studies assess the impacts and implications of natural processes and anthropogenic effects, such as climate change, on soil and ecosystem behavior and development.
The graduate group in ecology is an interdisciplinary graduate program that offers students a combination of both basic and applied ecology. Students gain advanced knowledge within one of the following organized areas of emphasis: agricultural ecology, conservation ecology, ecological genomics and genetics, ecosystems and landscape ecology, ecotoxicology, environmental policy and human ecology, integrative ecology, marine ecology, physiological ecology, or restoration ecology.
The JDPE is a doctoral degree that is run jointly by the Ecology Program at San Diego State University and the Ecology Graduate Group at UC Davis. The joint nature of the doctoral program offers two primary advantages. First, students benefit from contact and expertise in and outside of the classroom with faculty members of two strong ecology programs. Second, across the two campuses, students have the opportunity to access facilities and field sites in nearly all the major biomes of California.
The program emphasizes the integration of basic and applied aspects of entomology in solving problems in biology, agriculture, and the environment. Students can specialize in a diversity of areas such as biological control, economic entomology, pollination biology, insect chemical ecology, insect olfaction, insect demography, insect physiology, insect toxicology, integrated pest management, ecology and evolution, forensic entomology, medical entomology, and systematics. The Environmental Policy and Management Program combines a background in scientific preparation with training in diverse social science, management, and professional disciplines. A focus of this program will be interdisciplinary training on the roles of science that is directly relevant to real-world environmental policy and management issues.
The Nutritional Biology Graduate Group is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide the skills, and prepare students for modern, cutting-edge nutrition research. The faculty encompasses several colleges including the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, School of Medicine, and the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Students gain advanced knowledge of the use of engineering to efficiently produce, distribute, and process biological products, such as food, feed, and fiber, while conserving natural resources, preserving environmental quality, and ensuring the health and safety of people.
The Geography Graduate Program provides a strong core in geographic concepts, theories, methods, and traditions, with more in-depth course-work available in geography’s four main areas of emphasis: environmental sciences; methods, models, and GIS Science; nature and society; and people, place, and region.
Students study the application of biological, chemical, physical, and behavioral sciences to the processing, preservation, quality evaluation, public health aspects, and utilization of foods. For the M.S., there are four areas of specialization: chemistry-biochemistry, microbiology, processing, and sensory sciences. Individually designed programs are also accepted. For the Ph.D., there are three areas of emphasis: biochemistry/chemistry, microbiology/ fermentation, and sensory sciences.
