Our profs weigh in on new prez and team

UC Davis students are watching their new president, looking for signs of positive change. Our faculty is not just watching but analyzing Barack Obama and his policies – and the campus will be the beneficiary.

As experts on subjects ranging from historical context and foreign policy to the economy, Congressional relations with the president and the sociology of innovation, UC Davis professors will be using their scholarship to give context and understanding to complex issues facing the Obama administration.

Last week, a panel with some of these experts addressed the challenges facing the new president that can be viewed in the video above.

The panel was moderated by Zeev Maoz, professor of political science, with Kimberlee Shauman, associate professor of sociology, addressing social challenges; Alan M. Taylor, professor of economics, on the economy; Carlton Larson, professor of law, on legal and constitutional issues; and Miroslav Nincic, professor of political science, on foreign policy.

The event and video were sponsored by the Institute of Governmental Affairs. The institute, which holds regular public talks on the third floor of Shields Library, has created a new series, “Perspectives on the Obama Administration,” to engage the UC Davis community in the national dialogue.

The aim is to showcase our faculty members’ expertise as political scientists, sociologists, historians and economists challenge each other to make sense of what’s going on within our new government.

Those talks, either filmed or recorded for audio, will be placed on UC Davis on iTunes U and our YouTube site, as well as on the institute’s Web page.

Here are recent stories and videos that showcase our faculty’s involvement with the new president and his administration.
