The arXiv is a permanent, freely available digital library of research articles (or e-prints) in physics, mathematics, computer science, and quantitative biology maintained at Cornell University. It was started in 1991 at Los Alamos in the area of high-energy theoretical physics and was then known as hep-th; for many years it was also known as "xxx".
The Front for the arXiv is an overlay maintained at UC Davis by Greg Kuperberg. (Please send questions or comments to the addresses at the bottom and not to my personal e-mail address.) It was started in 1998 as a front end for the mathematics section. It was rewritten from scratch, and expanded to the rest of the arXiv, in "2007". (Actually, the rewrite began in 2003, but it was woefully beset by procrastination.)
The Front for the arXiv is made possible by the hospitality of UC Davis, the UC Davis mathematics department, and the arXiv itself.
The maintainer of the Front gratefully acknowledges Nathan Dunfield for testing the expanded version, and Kaya Memisoglu for providing some of the icons. Too many people to list here helped with the old Front.
Major resources used by the Front include Python, MySQL. Lucene, Apache, XML, CSS, Fedora, and, of course, the arXiv.

The arXiv is governed by Cornell University Library, and, on a day-to-day basis, maintained by the Cornell technical staff. It is also has an overall advisory committee, plus an advisory committee for each discipline. (Alas, the Front has no such advisory structure.)
